When is the Best Time to Catch a Hammerhead?

malapascua hammerhead season

Malapascua is one of the most popular destinations for snorkelers and sailors alike. Every year thousands of visitors flood the area, some with the intention of catching a glimpse of the world’s largest hammerhead shark. Others just want to relax on one of the world’s best beaches. Whatever the reason for visiting the islands, the island of Malapascua always has something to offer.

The best time of year to visit Malapascua is from April to October. During this time of the year the waters are warmer and there are more chances for snorkeling and diving. You will be able to find many wrecks that have not been explored that provide an incredible view. If you are lucky you might see black sharks too. This is the best time to go diving and you will also be able to watch the turtles play and feed at the coral bed. Make sure to bring your camera!

Once the weather turns hot in April, the water temperatures start to rise. It can get quite cold in the mornings and evenings. As well, the frequency of swells increases. It is best to avoid swimming during high-tension periods. You might want to consider bringing your swimsuit instead of flip flops if you decide to visit the beaches. Make sure to check the temperature of the water before entering the water.

At this time of the year the marine life population begins to die out. You can expect to see fewer fish in the area. This is due to the lack of food due to the high tourist influx. Many fish species begin to migrate to other areas of the Pacific during this time. Check with local dive shops or check online for when the best times to fish in Malapascua.

After April, the best time to fish in this area starts to decrease. The ocean waters begin to warm up and the water levels start to recede. The temperature will remain fairly cool through May. It can still get a bit warmer in the evenings though.

There are a few key things that you need to keep in mind when fishing for hammerheads in the months of May and June. The waters can become warm quite quickly. If you are planning on fishing during these months, you should plan your trip weeks or even months ahead of time. The best time of day to fish will differ from location to location. During the day the water tends to become cooler. You will find the shallow areas to be the best for hammerhead activity.

In the evening the temperatures start to rise. The best time of day to fish will again vary from location to location. If you are going to Hawaii, you might find better success if you fish during the nighttime. If you are looking for good luck while fishing in the evening hours, you may want to stay away from trolling in the deep waters and instead cast out a light rove around the wrecks in hopes of hitting a fish.

Once you get over the hump of trying to plan your vacation properly, you will have a better idea of when is the best time of year to go Hammerhead fishing. The seasons listed above are the peak times when the fishing is best in the region. Malapascua offers many other types of trophy fish including eagle rays and turtles. It’s an island off the coast of Mexico that doesn’t have a clear-cut reputation as a tourist destination. So, it’s best to avoid the months of November through February when the hammerhead season is at its worst.
